Be ships cross-platform OS
Be has released BeOS 5 Pro, its operating system, for both Intel and PowerPC-based machines.
Be also released the free version of the operating system, BeOS 5 Personal Edition, which is available at no charge, but for Intel-based PCs only. This includes a programmers’ development kit and library of demonstration tools. It’s available from the company’s Web site.
BeOS 5 Pro, however, is sold through third-party publishers, who will decide on pricing and packaging, and will be responsible for distribution.
Features include its ability to handle terabytes of data, and encoding support for CinePak, raw audio, MP3, P-JPEG, and Indeo 5. Twenty-six applications are bundled with the software, on top of any that the third-party publishers might add.
